The Nikon D3
May 26, 2008
I was always an F kind of guy. My first Nikon pro camera was the original F - a 1971 black body FTN. It supplemented my FM2 and I had it until just a couple of years ago when I sold it to a close friend, who bought it with the understanding that I might occasionally need to fondle it… call it conjugal visits.
A few years later I found a really nice F2 that I still have… I skipped the F3 and F4 entirely Read more
2 Days to A Better Website.
May 21, 2008
When I first got out of school it was still common to run around with your portfolio containing tear sheets and photographs. It was always a pain to collects these, the few copies in hand were precious and almost irreplaceable. I cannot count the times I lost my portfolio. More often than not, I wouldn’t bother to replace the evidence of the work. Oh, the drama. I would end up losing gigs because I didn’t have the tearsheet for this or that. 20 people lined up for a gig, the last thing an art director wanted was to call to verify you had actually done a job like "that". Anyone Still Using Dreamweaver Is A Chump

Web rankings depend on a mysterious mix of incoming and outgoing links, the quality of said links, and content. To achieve better rankings, most people assume external links (links from other websites) are more important. The truth is internal pages actually offer more link value. Alt tags, page titles, keywords all work together to make a site search engine friendly. Even so, content is king. Search engines crave new content therefore they give more importance to sites with constantly changing content.
New content & Digg can drive enough traffic to your site to compensate for not really understanding the SEO rules of website design. Read more
The Computer, The Painter, The Image and His Brushes
May 12, 2008
When Dr. Michael Roach asked me if I might consider writing an article for DigitalAppleJuice, I was taken aback. I am a painter, and, one could say, a primitive, when it comes to the making of digital images. At least I used to be. Over the past five years, for a number of very practical reasons, I have become more adept at manipulating images on my Mac, Read more
Find Your Passion…
April 27, 2008
Being artists, we tend to be more passionate about things than those using the other side of their brains. Of course I am not saying you can’t be passionate about numbers, but I have a feeling my accountant gets his kicks away from his nine to five. We are blessed in that Art can truly bring out the passionate side in a person who can see it for what it is.
What is passion exactly? Read more
Asset Management for The Digital Artist.
January 30, 2008
Asset Management can mean different things. In every instance, it refers to the collection and organization of data about the things an organization or individual owns. To an accountant, this data is used to manage the financial aspects of ownership- taxes, cost of ownership, etc. In essence, everything having to do with MONEY.
To the digital artist, asset management refers to the organization of the ever growing library of fonts, images, reference pictures we depend on creatively. The building blocks of our ARTWORK.
Be Successful: Make Mistakes!
January 15, 2008

hen I was in college I can’t tell you how many times the subject of "what makes art–art" came up. Everyone had his or her own ideas and theories some of which I agreed with and some not so much. Of course there was the occasional "non- art major" who belted out with " How can someone call that art?" when viewing a slide of one of Jackson Pollock’s paintings or my all time favorite - Mondrian. Reconsider Buying That Dell.
December 24, 2007
Dell Inspiron Laptop. It’s cheap. It’s pretty. It’s probably a lemon. After 57 days of trying to resolve all the hardware issues, my nephew is the proud owner of a $2000 doorstop.
UPDATE: My nephew received a phone call today (yes, TODAY, the day after Xmas) from DELL’s consumer advocate- Anna Simpson- informing him that DELL had decided to replace his computer with a similar or better computer.
UPDATE: Dec 26th: The refurbished computer DELL’s Consumer Advocate is offering? It comes with a 90-Day Warranty. A 90 Day Warranty. Hell- IT’S TAKING LONGER THAN THAT TO RESOLVE THIS.
UPDATE: January 2008 I will say that Dell has behaved admirably even if their products don’t seem to be worthy of my confidence. They will warranty the new laptop for a full year.
