not a problem #2

"Syncing to devices

Each time you send an email, Gmail automatically adds the recipient of that email to your contact list. Contact Sync then transfers all of these contacts to your Address Book. To limit the number of contacts you transfer to your device, we recommend syncing only select Address Book Groups, rather than all of your contacts."

the auto-add function in gmail not being optional is not a problem.

what we need is a serious update to the contact list.

easy grouping, get a list of contacts that are not in a group (so they can all be assigned to a group) then create a group for non-important people, or more specificaly "the parents of my son’s football team"

then isync does not sync contacts to your phone that don't have a phone number (option). so, at least your phone gets only the contact you need. while your computer stores the world.
